The White Guard

“The White Guard” is the first novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, written in the early 1920s, recounting the fate of the Turbin family, members of the intelligentsia in Kyiv during the Russian Civil War. The work reflects the chaos and tragedy of the revolutionary era, when the city repeatedly changed hands among various political forces. Largely autobiographical, the novel is considered one of the most significant works of twentieth-century Russian literature.
